Bees sit 14th after home defeat
Brentford suffered a dispiriting 4-1 home loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night, extending their winless streak to five matches in the Premier League. However, head coach Thomas Frank identified several positive aspects amidst the disappointing result.
Frank acknowledged that his team uncharacteristically conceded soft goals against Wolves but emphasized that the overall performance did not warrant such a lopsided scoreline. He described the match as one of those days where everything went wrong.
One silver lining for the Bees was the return of midfielder Mathias Jensen, who made his first appearance since November. A creative force for Brentford, Jensen has contributed three goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, second only to Bryan Mbeumo’s 10 goal contributions.
Keane Lewis-Potter, who scored his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa recently, also impressed against Wolves despite not finding the net. He registered two shots on target, matched only by Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan, and provided two key passes, including a telling cross to Vitaly Janelt that nearly resulted in an equalizer.
Frank also praised striker Yoane Wissa, who scored a superb goal to briefly bring Brentford back into the contest. Wissa had endured a dry spell of eight games without a goal before his strike against Wolves, but he displayed an improved overall performance against Wolves.
The returning Jensen, along with the emerging form of Lewis-Potter and Wissa, provide reasons for optimism for Brentford as they seek to end their poor run of results. The Bees will have an opportunity to do so when they face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
