British number one Cameron Norrie faced a third-round defeat against Frenchman Gael Monfils in a challenging three-set match at Indian Wells. Despite winning the first set in a tie-break, Norrie eventually succumbed to a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 loss after over three hours of play. Monfils (37) maintained his perfect record against Norrie winning all four of their encounters.
Monfils will now compete against Norwegian ninth seed Casper Ruud or French teenager Arthur Fils for a spot in the quarter-finals. Norrie who battled illness after the Rio tournament in late February expressed disappointment but acknowledged his improved health and overall performance.
In another match, Danish seventh seed Holger Rune secured victory over Italian 26th seed Lorenzo Musetti with a 6-2 7-6 (7-5) score. Men’s world number one Novak Djokovic is set to face Italian 20 years old Luca Nardi in a later match on Monday.
