Capello Criticizes ‘Disrespectful’ American Owners Over Mourinho Departure

Former Italian coach Fabio Capello strongly criticized the American owners of Serie A clubs, accusing them of showing disrespect to Paolo Maldini and José Mourinho. Capello, speaking on Tuesday, expressed his dissatisfaction with Roma’s decision to suddenly sack Mourinho and replace him with Daniele De Rossi until the end of the season.

Capello, in an interview with Sky Sport Italia, questioned Roma’s decision-making process, particularly the apparent lack of respect for their employees. He cited Maldini’s dismissal, stating inaccurately that it was done over the phone, when, in fact, it was announced to Maldini in person in a hotel in Milan.

Capello emphasized the business-focused approach of these American owners, criticizing their lack of sensitivity and suggesting a need for more respectful ways of parting with employees. He found Roma’s decision to dismiss Mourinho unexpected, expressing disappointment in the perceived lack of communication between the coach and the owners.

Reflecting on his own experience in Russia, Capello recalled a similar abrupt termination and stressed the importance of a different relationship dynamic between owners and coaches in such situations.

Regarding Daniele De Rossi taking over as Roma coach, Capello acknowledged the challenges De Rossi faces, considering the team’s current struggles with a limited squad. Despite the difficulties, Capello sees it as a significant opportunity for De Rossi and emphasized the need for him to motivate and unite the players.

Capello shared memories of De Rossi’s debut at Roma over 20 years ago, highlighting the player’s readiness for the team. He anticipates De Rossi’s coaching career, expressing curiosity about whether he can replicate his success as a coach for Roma.

De Rossi is scheduled to lead his first training session as Roma coach today at around 16:00 GMT, 17:00 local time.
