Enzo Fernandez Chelsea midfielder underwent surgery for a groin injury ruling him out for the rest of the Premier League season but aiming for a return for the Copa America. The surgery followed a month-long struggle with an inguinal hernia. Despite attempts at non-invasive treatment, surgery was deemed necessary supported by consultations with Argentina team doctors.
Fernandez consulted with a kinesiologist from his River Plate days before the procedure. His absence is expected to be around three weeks allowing him to return in time for the Copa America starting on June 20. Chelsea season has not met expectations since his arrival despite flashes of talent. Mauricio Pochettino believes Fernandez will improve next season with more experience in the Premier League.
Chelsea still have six league games remaining and a chance to qualify for the Europa League. They face upcoming fixtures against Villa, Tottenham, West Ham, Forest, Brighton and Bournemouth.
