China captain Zhang Linpeng initially announced his retirement from international football after a disappointing 2-2 draw against Singapore in the 2026 World Cup qualifier, which he criticized as “disgraceful.” However, after two days of reflection, the 34 years old reversed his decision, stating that retirement is not the only option and expressing his commitment to contributing to the national team.

Zhang, who plays for Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League has earned 105 caps for China. Currently, China is in third place in qualifying group C, closely trailing Thailand on goal difference with South Korea leading the group. Their next match against Singapore will take place in Tianjin.
