Controversial VAR Decision Mars Nottingham Forest’s 3-2 Defeat to Newcastle

Nuno Espirito Santo the manager of Nottingham Forest expressed frustration over the lack of a penalty decision in their 3-2 Premier League defeat to Newcastle. Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi was involved in a collision with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka prompting VAR review.

However, the decision not to award a penalty stood. Nuno believes it was a clear penalty and questioned the VAR decision while pundits like Jamie Redknapp and Stephen Kelly suggested Newcastle “got away with one.” The defeat places Forest 16th in the league.

Premier League’s Tony Scholes acknowledged imperfections in VAR but highlighted its overall positive impact citing a 96% accuracy rate in correct decisions during the 2023-24 season.
