The introduction of the video assistant referee (VAR) in football was intended to reduce controversial decisions but many fans believe it has had the opposite effect. Despite referees being aided by off-pitch officials reviewing match footage, VAR has been criticized for causing more controversy. The use of pitch-side replays and feeds from cameras was meant to improve decision-making in four key areas such as goals, red cards, penalties and mistaken identity.
However, many decisions reviewed by VAR are subjective and depend on referees’ interpretation of the rules. Additionally, VAR delays decisions affecting the flow of the game. While it has corrected many calls, numerous controversial decisions have overshadowed its benefits. Critics argue that VAR interrupts the spontaneity of football and contributes to the polarization of opinion turning the sport into a circus.
Furthermore, VAR raises questions about fairness in sports and whether it favors dominant teams over underdogs. The use of technology like VAR may exacerbate the decline in uncertainty of outcomes in football matches making them more predictable.
