Defending Champion Norrie Falls to Navone in Rio Open Semis

Defending champion Cameron Norrie suffered a straight-set defeat to Argentine qualifier Mariano Navone in the ATP Rio Open semi-finals. Norri, the British number one was looking to secure back-to-back titles but struggled in the hot and humid conditions.

Navone ranked 113th globally won 6-4, 6-2 to advance to his first ATP final where he will face compatriot Sebastien Baez. Meanwhile, in Los Cabos Australia’s Jordan Thompson secured his first ATP title at the age of 29 defeating Casper Ruud in the final.

Thompson’s remarkable week included a comeback from 0-6, 0-3 in the quarterfinals and a three hours victory over Alexander Zverev in the semis. Thompson expressed his surprise and joy calling the win a “miracle.”
