England defenders Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire along with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will miss Tuesday’s friendly against Belgium due to injury. In their absence, James Trafford and Rico Lewis have been called up from the England Under-21 squad.
Trafford (21) is earning his first senior call-up, while Lewis aged 19 debuted for the senior team in November. Walker sustained an injury during Saturday’s friendly against Brazil while Maguire was also forced off during the match. Crystal Palace’s Johnstone, who did not play on Saturday has also returned to his club.
With Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka also ruled out due to injury, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney have the opportunity to impress. Watkins played against Brazil while Toney is expected to feature against Belgium. England manager Gareth Southgate praised Toney’s confidence and self-belief, highlighting his strengths in passing and link play.
