Etihad is a fortress: No home loss for City in 2024

Manchester City concluded an extraordinary 2023 with a decisive 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at the Etihad Stadium, maintaining their unblemished home record throughout the entire calendar year. The triumph was marked by goals from Rodrigo and Julian Alvarez, showcasing the team’s unwavering dominance on their home turf.
The match commenced with a resounding celebration, commemorating the club’s remarkable achievements in 2023, including securing the Big Five trophies. This festive atmosphere was followed by a solemn moment of silence to honor individuals connected to both clubs who had passed away during the year.
From the outset, Manchester City asserted their control over the game, with Julian Alvarez narrowly missing an early opportunity to score. The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute by Rodrigo, who skillfully maneuvered through the Sheffield United defense before unleashing a precise shot into the far corner of the goal.
Bernardo Silva came close to extending City’s lead shortly after, but his attempt was skillfully parried away by Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham. Kyle Walker also unleashed a powerful strike that narrowly missed the target.
The second half saw an invigorated Manchester City team, further catalyzed by the introduction of Oscar Bobb. The lively Bobb and Phil Foden combined seamlessly, creating scoring opportunities for both Foden and Alvarez. Alvarez eventually sealed the victory in the 61st minute, tapping in a pass from Foden after a clever interplay between the two players.
Despite Sheffield United’s attempts to penetrate City’s defense, the home team remained resolute, maintaining possession and sealing a comfortable 2-0 win. The victory leaves Manchester City two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool at the halfway point of the season.
This triumph not only marks an unforgettable 2023 for Manchester City but also extends their remarkable home winning streak, etching another chapter in the club’s illustrious history.
