FC Barcelona’s opportunity to narrow the gap with the top two teams in the La Liga table turned into a disappointment as they suffered a humiliating 4-2 defeat against neighbors Girona at the Estadi Olímpic yesterday.
On a night dedicated to celebrating Catalan football, Barça possessed more of the ball, but Girona appeared to exploit their weaknesses fully.
The match was intense from the outset, with Barcelona recognizing the need to build on their impressive victory against Atletico last week. However, a critical error allowed Girona to open the scoring in the 12th minute through Artem Dovbyk, with Robert Lewandowski leveling the score just seven minutes later.
Girona extended their lead with two additional goals from Gutierrez and Fernandez, putting them in control. Although Gundogan managed to pull one back in added time, it wasn’t enough.
Just when it seemed the match would conclude with a 3-2 scoreline, Christian Stuani delivered the final blow with the fourth goal.
With this victory, Girona now leads by two points at the top, while Barcelona sits in fourth place, tied with Atletico on points.
