Innovation is crucial for the success of football but the proposed introduction of blue cards and sin-bins for dissent and tactical fouls is seen as a step backward for the game. While dissent needs to be eradicated risking the quality of the spectacle may not be the solution.

Referees already have the tools to deal with misconduct using yellow or red cards and these methods should be employed more consistently. The potential introduction of blue cards is viewed as overcomplicating matters and may lead to increased time wasting tactics.

The emphasis should be on player education and initiatives like sin-bins may work at grassroots levels but may not be suitable for elite football. VAR has improved decision making and reduced attempts to influence referees. However, concerns persist about the seamless integration of blue cards and sin-bins and the focus should be on simpler solutions to preserve the essence of the game.
