Former Ajax Star Quincy Promes Receives Six-Year Prison Sentence for Cocaine Smuggling

Quincy Promes a former Ajax football star has received a six-year prison sentence for his involvement in smuggling over 1,350 kilograms of cocaine. He was charged in May for allegedly participating in the smuggling of two cocaine batches intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020. Promes and a co-suspect were found guilty of importing, exporting, transporting and possessing the drugs which were hidden in a sea salt shipment from Brazil.

The former Netherlands international, now playing for Spartak Moscow did not attend the trial leading prosecutors to criticize his sense of invincibility. Prosecutors questioned how a successful footballer could become deeply involved in crime seeking a nine years prison sentence. The case originated from information received by the police Criminal Intelligence Team indicating Promes’ involvement in the cocaine trade.

In addition to his recent charges, Promes was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin in June. The judge criticized him for not defending himself or showing remorse resulting in a longer sentence. Promes an Amsterdam-born forward played for the Dutch national team and had spells with clubs such as Twente, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Ajax.
