Former Everton Star and China National Team Manager Li Tie Receives Life Sentence for Corruption Scandal

Former Everton player Li Tie who also served as the manager of China’s national football team has reportedly been sentenced to life in prison in China for corruption. The 46 years old admitted to paying bribes to become the coach of the national team and participating in match-fixing scandals to achieve promotions with his club teams.

In a televised confession, Li expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the improper practices in football at the time. The former head of the Chinese Football Association, Chen Xuyuan has also received a 15 years sentence for bribery.

Li Tie once considered a talented player, had a notable stint with Everton during the 2002-03 season but faced injury issues that affected his career. After coaching at various levels, he served as the caretaker coach of the China national team and was later appointed permanently before facing corruption allegations.
