Formula 1 organizers have announced modifications to the sprint race format for the 2024 season. Sprint qualifying and free practice sessions will now take place on Friday followed by the sprint race as the first on track activity on Saturday preceding the main grand prix qualifying.
Previously, Saturday was dedicated solely to sprint focused events. The changes will be implemented in six sprint races scheduled for China, Miami, Austria, the US Grand Prix in Austin, Brazil and Qatar. The FIA will present the regulatory refinements for these adjustments to the World Motorsport Council on February 28.
Additionally, the FIA confirmed that DRS activation will be adjusted to one lap after the start or restart following a safety car period rather than two laps.
