Franz Tost, the former team principal of Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri, concluded his long tenure with an outburst during his last Formula 1 race at Abu Dhabi. Upset with a strategy call that affected driver Yuki Tsunoda, Tost considered throwing the strategists’ laptops onto the track criticizing their reliance on simulations over common sense. Despite the relatively inconsequential race outcome and Tost’s impending departure his strong work ethic was evident. Tost dismissed the idea of becoming an F1 pundit citing potentially extreme views. Reflecting on the Abu Dhabi incident he emphasized the importance of common sense over blind trust in computer simulations urging engineers to prioritize human judgment. Tost also noted that drivers should actively study data for self-improvement contrasting it with the reliance on computers by strategists and engineers.
