West Ham’s burning sense of injustice over a denied penalty should not overshadow their own failings in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Freiburg in the Europa League last-16 first leg. Despite VAR lengthy check and protests the referee chose not to award a penalty after Noah Weisshaupt’s handball.

West Ham who struggled with bad choices throughout the game conceded the decisive goal when Edson Álvarez lost possession allowing Freiburg’s Michael Gregoritsch to score. Despite being favorites, West Ham’s lethargy and lack of control in midfield contributed to their defeat. The return leg at the London Stadium will determine their Europa League fate.
