Gary Woodland, former US Open champion, is eager to rejuvenate his career as he makes a comeback to golf following surgery to remove a brain tumor. Diagnosed in May and undergoing surgery in September, the 39-year-old American is set to participate in the Sony Open in Hawaii, marking his return since August.
Woodland, who triumphed at the 2019 US Open, expressed his determination not to let the health setback hinder his progress. He views this phase as a catalyst for a career resurgence and believes in overcoming challenges. Woodland emphasized his commitment to playing top-notch golf, stating that he is here to pursue his passion despite the unexpected health hurdle.
Undergoing MRI scans every three months, Woodland shared positive results from his latest examination. He started experiencing symptoms shortly after the 2023 Masters but continued competing on the PGA Tour while managing his condition with medication.
Describing his symptoms, Woodland mentioned feeling unlike himself, with tremors, fear, and heightened anxiety, especially around mortality. Eventually diagnosed with partial seizures, he played in 24 events in 2023, achieving top-10 finishes twice. However, he decided to undergo surgery upon the advice of his caddie, who noticed Woodland’s struggles on the course, including forgetfulness and a lack of focus.
Woodland is optimistic about the future, determined to overcome the challenges posed by the tumor and resume his golf career with renewed vigor.
