From Old Trafford to ‘Wembley of the North’: Council and Club Explore Regeneration Plans

Sir Jim Ratcliffe a co-owner of Manchester United has proposed replacing Old Trafford with a new stadium that could double as a ‘Wembley of the North.’ Trafford Council welcomes this proposal as part of its wider plans to regenerate the Trafford Wharf area. However, Councillor Liz Patel emphasized that it would be the club’s responsibility to fund the new stadium.

The plans align with Trafford Council’s Wharfside Development aiming to emulate successful stadium developments at other clubs. Ratcliffe highlights Old Trafford’s need for refurbishment and any new stadium proposal could involve government discussions about taxpayer funds. The council supports the ambitious ‘Wembley of the North’ concept anticipating a positive impact on the area’s future.

While the cost of a new stadium is estimated at £2 billion the council seeks investment for the broader Wharfside plans emphasizing the council’s role in guiding and securing funding. The regeneration plans expected to take up to 20 years focus on creating a family friendly space and improving fan safety and experience.
