Pep Guardiola’s unsuccessful attempt to sign James Maddison might trouble Manchester City in their upcoming FA Cup match against Tottenham. Maddison who has recovered from an ankle injury, was missed during Spurs’ rough patch before Christmas. He made a strong start at Spurs with three goals and six assists in his first 11 Premier League games. Maddison got injured during a loss to Chelsea which led to Spurs’ dip in form. Guardiola reportedly tried to sign Maddison last year but Spurs eventually secured him.

Maddison’s potential return for the FA Cup clash could be crucial for Spurs against the reigning Treble winners. City, under Guardiola have usually won domestic cup competitions but they need to win the FA Cup this season after exiting the Carabao Cup. Failure to win a trophy this season could raise questions, especially after winning all titles last season. Maddison’s comeback could spice up the competition with City’s potential exit opening up opportunities for others to shine.
