Harry Kane's Title Aspirations Dented as Bayern Munich Suffers Shock 1-0 Loss to Werder Bremen
Harry Kane’s aspirations for a first-ever league title took a hit as Bayern Munich suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Werder Bremen on Sunday. A 59th-minute goal by Mitchell Weiser condemned Thomas Tuchel’s team to the loss, leaving them seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. This defeat, Werder’s first win in Munich since 2008, marked Bayern’s second league loss of the season. With 41 points and a game in hand, Bayern sits in second place, while Leverkusen leads with 48 points after a dramatic 3-2 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.
Throughout the early stages, the hosts struggled to break down a well-organized Werder defense at the Allianz Arena. The visitors even found the net with a 25th-minute swift counter, but Justin Njinmah’s effort was disallowed due to a foul at the start of the move. Former Bayern player Weiser succeeded in the 59th minute, entering the box, shaking off his marker, and unleashing an unstoppable shot past keeper Manuel Neuer.
Despite Bayern’s subsequent offensive efforts, they lacked a clear plan, and top scorer Harry Kane missed the target with a close-range header in the 72nd minute. Kane’s former Spurs teammate Eric Dier, who recently joined on loan, was part of the traveling squad but did not feature as Tuchel’s side unsuccessfully sought an equalizer. Werder’s keeper Michael Zetterer made crucial saves, including denying Leroy Sane’s shot in the 79th minute and tipping the ball away from Kane’s head, securing the significant league win for the visitors.
Dier might make his debut when Bayern faces Bundesliga strugglers Union Berlin on Wednesday, with each point becoming increasingly valuable in the pursuit of keeping pace with Xabi Alonso’s runaway league leaders.
