Amateur golfer Nick Dunlap secured a historic victory at The American Express becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson in 1991. The 20-year-old claimed the title with a one-shot lead over South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Despite the win, Dunlap as an amateur, won’t receive any prize money with the $1.5 million winner’s cheque going to Bezuidenhout. Dunlap’s final round featured a double-bogey on the seventh hole but included three crucial birdies. The University of Alabama student now holds a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and gains entry to prestigious events like the Masters the US PGA Championship and The Players Championship. Dunlap’s victory marks a significant achievement making him the seventh amateur to win a PGA Tour event.
