Iga Swiatek’s bid for another ‘Sunshine Double’ was halted as she suffered a 6-4 6-2 defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round of the Miami Open. Swiatek who had clinched the first leg at Indian Wells earlier in the month was convincingly outplayed by the Russian world No. 16. Alexandrova’s dominant display saw her secure the biggest win of her career, as she capitalized on her powerful groundstrokes and formidable serve.
Despite Swiatek’s efforts, she failed to break Alexandrova’s serve and struggled to find her rhythm under the Florida lights. Reflecting on her victory, Alexandrova expressed satisfaction with her performance and attributed her success to hard work. The loss marked Alexandrova’s second win over Swiatek with their previous encounter occurring in Melbourne in 2021.
Swiatek disappointed with her performance, acknowledged Alexandrova’s superior play and highlighted difficulties in reading her opponent’s serve. Alexandrova advances to the quarter-finals to face fifth seed Jessica Pegula who defeated fellow American Emma Navarro in straight sets.
