Red to Yellow: The Chapter Unfolding as Sancho Heads Back to Dortmund

Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have finalized an agreement for Jadon Sancho to move on loan to the Bundesliga club for the remainder of the season. The deal includes a €4m (£3.4m) package for United, covering the loan fee and a portion of the winger’s salary.

Before formally joining Dortmund, Sancho will undergo a medical examination. Notably, the loan arrangement does not include an option for Dortmund to purchase him. Sancho enjoyed a successful stint at Dortmund from 2017 to 2021, leading to United’s initial £73m acquisition. However, his time at Old Trafford has soured, and he has been sidelined for over four months.

The falling out between Sancho and manager Erik ten Hag worsened when the player declined to apologize, effectively accusing the manager of dishonesty. Following Sancho’s exclusion from the lineup in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, Ten Hag cited the England international’s failure to meet training standards as the reason. In response, Sancho took to social media to label the explanation as “completely untrue.”

In a parallel move, Dortmund is securing another loan signing from the Premier League, Chelsea’s left-back Ian Maatsen. Having completed his medical, the Dutchman has Chelsea’s consent to extend his contract until 2027, including a release clause. Dortmund will have priority to buy Maatsen in June.
