There were initial concerns about Liverpool’s ability to generate and capitalize on chances in the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. However, their recent performance against Bournemouth showcased the team’s capability to overcome these challenges.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, possesses a wealth of attacking talent, but the fitness and form of Diogo Jota become crucial, particularly with Salah participating in the Africa Cup of Nations. Jota’s proficiency in finishing has been a standout feature of his game since joining Liverpool in 2020, and he demonstrated it once again with two high-quality goals in Liverpool’s resounding 4-0 victory.
Jota’s consistency in delivering end products from open play aligns him with the top strikers in the Premier League. His ability to fill the void left by Salah’s absence is vital for Liverpool’s attacking prowess.
In midfield, there has been significant rotation, and Alexis Mac Allister has often played in the holding role. While not necessarily his preferred position, as evidenced by his goal-scoring performance for Brighton last season in a more advanced role, Mac Allister showcased his attacking prowess against Bournemouth.
Despite returning from injury and making only his third start after missing most of December, Mac Allister displayed sharpness. Klopp needed someone to step up and provide creativity from the middle of the pitch, a role previously played by the injured Alexander-Arnold. Mac Allister embraced this responsibility, demonstrating courage on the ball and the ability to make things happen, reminiscent of Alexander-Arnold’s qualities.
Mac Allister’s forward-thinking play, coupled with his excellent passing, especially in the first half, contributed significantly to Liverpool’s control of the game and their extension of the lead at the top of the table.
While Jota and Mac Allister stood out, other positive aspects emerged for Liverpool in the match. Darwin Nunez’s two goals will boost his confidence, and although he may not be under excessive pressure to score, his contributions further add to Liverpool’s attacking depth.
