Kenya’s 24 years old marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana tragically died in a road accident in western Kenya. Kiptum a rising star had surpassed Eliud Kipchoge’s record in 2023 clocking 2 hours and 35 seconds in Chicago.
Both athletes were named in Kenya’s provisional marathon team for the Paris Olympics. The accident occurred when Kiptum lost control of the vehicle veering off the road and hitting a tree. The news has shocked the sports community with condolences from Kipchoge and tributes from Kenyan officials.
Kiptum’s rapid rise to fame began in 2022 and he recently aimed to break the two hours marathon barrier in Rotterdam. His coach Hakizimana played a crucial role in his success. The tragic incident leaves behind a void in Kenyan athletics mourning the loss of a promising talent and a dedicated coach.
