The highly anticipated battle for qualification in Champions Cup Pool 4 turned out to be straightforward for the reigning champions, La Rochelle. Following defeats to Leinster and Stormers in the first two rounds, doubts arose about La Rochelle’s qualification chances. However, they bounced back with a convincing win against Leicester, securing their spot in the last 16 and relegating Sale to the Challenge Cup.
Although Sale hoped for a victory to secure qualification, La Rochelle dominated, ending Sale’s hopes with a fourth consecutive defeat. Despite a promising start and late points, Sale couldn’t match La Rochelle’s performance. La Rochelle’s defensive strength and excellent plays, especially in the first half contributed to their 30-14 victory.
Sale faced challenges, including a serious knee injury to Jonny Hill, and struggled against La Rochelle’s defensive prowess. La Rochelle capitalized on their first-half advantage, scoring tries through Dillyn Leyds and Antoine Hastoy’s penalties, securing a 16-0 lead at halftime. La Rochelle continued their dominance in the second half sealing the win with tries from UJ Seuteni and Tawera Kerr-Barlow.
Although Sale scored late tries through Tom Roebuck and Agustín Creevy, La Rochelle secured a bonus point with Seuteni’s try. Despite Sale’s efforts, the Challenge Cup awaits them in spring. La Rochelle’s coach, Ronan O’Gara, expressed confidence in their future performances and few teams will look forward to facing La Rochelle.
