Axel Disasi late goal for Chelsea was controversially disallowed after a VAR review denying them a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa. Despite being two goals down, Chelsea staged a strong comeback at Villa Park with goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher. However, Disasi stoppage-time header was ruled out causing frustration for Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino. Villa initially took the lead through Marc Cucurella own goal and extended it with a goal from Morgan Rogers before halftime.
Although Chelsea fought back including a disallowed goal due to offside, they couldn’t complete the turnaround. Pochettino criticized the VAR decision expressing disappointment with its impact on the game. Unai Emery, Villa manager was pleased with his team’s performance but acknowledged the disappointment of losing a two goals lead. He praised their improvement and emphasized their goal of securing a Champions League spot.
Opta stats highlighted Chelsea rare avoidance of defeat from a two goals deficit and Villa strong goal-scoring form. Chelsea will face Tottenham and West Ham in upcoming matches while Villa has matches against Olympiakos and Brighton.
