Lewis Hamilton has come to terms with the controversial conclusion of his 2021 championship battle with Max Verstappen, despite feeling “robbed” of what could have been his record eighth Formula 1 title. The incident occurred at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where FIA race director Michael Masi made a critical error in applying F1 rulebook, leading to a contentious restart on the final lap.

Verstappen seized the opportunity to pass Hamilton and secure both the race win and his first championship. Reflecting on the experience in an interview with GQ Magazine, Hamilton admitted to feeling cheated but also highlighted the significance of the moment, particularly the support of his father. Despite the disappointment, Hamilton expressed pride in how he handled the situation and emphasized the importance of setting an example especially for younger generations.

While he still feels the impact when reminded of the race, Hamilton stated that he has found peace with the outcome. If the race had ended differently, Hamilton would have surpassed Michael Schumacher record of seven world championships. Since the Abu Dhabi race, Hamilton has not secured a victory in Formula 1.
