Richard Hughes has been appointed as Liverpool new sporting director and will commence his role after the current season. Hughes who previously served as technical director at Bournemouth joins Liverpool as Michael Edwards’ first appointment since Edwards became the CEO of Football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Hughes replaces Jorg Schmadtke who held the position temporarily.

Hughes and Edwards have a longstanding professional relationship spanning over 20 years, having previously worked together during Hughes’s playing career at Portsmouth. With a track record of signing young talents and fluency in three languages, Hughes brings valuable experience and connections to Liverpool.

One of his initial tasks will be to find a successor for Jurgen Klopp, who announced his departure in January. Additionally, Hughes will work on securing contract extensions for key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Edwards expressed confidence in Hughes, citing his outstanding judgment and leadership qualities. Hughes’s work at Bournemouth has been praised for his ability to develop young players despite financial constraints. His appointment reflects Liverpool’s commitment to building for a successful future under his guidance.
