Ahead of Sunday’s London Marathon, tributes will honor the late 2023 winner Kelvin Kiptum who tragically passed away earlier this year. Organizers anticipate a record-breaking turnout with over 50,000 participants expected to complete the route. In the elite races, world record attempts are on the horizon especially in the women’s event where Tigst Assefa leads the charge.
The men’s race features strong contenders like Tamirat Tola and Kenenisa Bekele. British athletes Emile Cairess and Callum Hawkins return joined by promising debutants. The wheelchair races promise excitement with David Weir aiming for victory against Marcel Hug. Sporting stars and celebrities including comedians and actors will also take part raising funds for various charities.
Notable participants include Russ Cook who recently completed a run across Africa and Dave Lock running in memory of his brother. Over 65,000 runners from 158 nations are registered for the event with favorable weather conditions expected on race day.
