Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi achieved a remarkable victory at the BNP Paribas Open, defeating his idol Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round. Ranked No. 123 in the ATP Rankings, Nardi is the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic at the ATP Masters 1000 or Grand Slam level and the fourth lowest-ranked player to defeat a reigning World No. 1 at a Masters 1000.
Nardi showcased an aggressive game plan and demonstrated composure ultimately securing the career-defining win with his sixth ace. Djokovic’s 11 matchs winning streak at ATP Masters 1000s was snapped and he suffered his first loss to a player outside the Top 50 since 2018. Nardi elated with the victory will face American Tommy Paul in the next round.
The Italian remarkable performance has propelled him to No. 96 in the ATP Live Rankings marking his Top 100 debut.
