Madrid Grand Prix Set to Replace Spanish Grand Prix in Formula 1 Calendar

Formula 1 has confirmed the addition of a Madrid Grand Prix to the calendar for the 2026 season. The new race will replace the Spanish Grand Prix and will feature a part-street circuit near Barajas international airport and Real Madrid’s training ground.

This development raises questions about the future of the Barcelona race at the Circuit de Catalunya although discussions about its continuation are ongoing. Spain has previously hosted two races in a single calendar year.

The decision to introduce the Madrid Grand Prix reflects the country’s enduring interest in Formula 1 with Spanish drivers Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso prominent on the grid. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali hailed Madrid’s rich sporting and cultural heritage marking an exciting new chapter for the sport in Spain.

The last Formula 1 race in Madrid took place at the Jarama circuit in 1981 with other Spanish venues including Valencia and Jerez de la Frontera.
