Pep Guardiola the manager of Manchester City has issued an apology to Kalvin Phillips for previously stating that the midfielder was “overweight” following the Qatar World Cup. Guardiola’s comments made in December 2022 had led to Phillips being excluded from a Carabao Cup fourth rounds match against Liverpool.

Phillips who is currently on loan to West Ham expressed that the remarks had significantly impacted his confidence. Guardiola acknowledging his mistake offered a public apology stating that he had already addressed the issue directly with Phillips.

The midfielder has faced challenges during his loan spell at West Ham including conceding goals and receiving a red card in recent matches.
