Manchester United Displayed Their Dominance Against League One Opponents Wigan Athletic

In the 22nd minute, Diogo Dalot scored a stunning curling strike to put the 12-time champions, Manchester United, in the lead after Marcus Rashford’s impressive shot was blocked. Despite United’s strong offensive push Rasmus Hojlund’s header hitting the bar, Rashford’s attempt saved by Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle against the post, and Alejandro Garnacho’s powerful shot hitting the woodwork Wigan couldn’t prevent United from pressing for a second goal.

Martial Godo’s missed opportunity from six yards cost the hosts an equalizer before United secured the win in the second half. Bruno Fernandes won a penalty after Liam Shaw’s challenge, converting it himself for United’s second goal.

Manchester United drew either Newport County, ranked 18th in League Two, or non-league Eastleigh, ranked 11th in the National League (the second-lowest ranked side remaining) in the fourth round, scheduled for the last weekend of January.

Despite Tickle’s commendable effort in goal, United’s 33 attempts resulted in only two goals, but coach Erik Ten Hag was content with the win, emphasizing the significance of the FA Cup and the importance of not underestimating opponents.

The match, played in front of a sold-out crowd at DW Stadium for the first time in over 10 years, showcased Wigan’s resilience after facing near bankruptcy before being rescued by local businessman Mike Danson.

In a season marked by difficulties for United, including 14 losses and disappointments in various competitions, the FA Cup remains their chance for redemption. Fielding their strongest lineup, United overwhelmed Wigan, although missed chances by McTominay and Rashford kept the scoreline narrow.

Despite Wigan’s efforts, including attempts by Thelo Aasgaard and Stephen Humphrys, they couldn’t equalize after Dalot’s goal, eventually conceding to Fernandes’ penalty.

Manager Shaun Maloney acknowledged United’s strength, expressing pride in his team’s effort despite the loss, highlighting their resilience under pressure and hoping to learn from this experience in the upcoming matches.
