Money vs. Tradition: Webb Simpson Calls Out Younger Golfers' Priorities
Other Sports | January 16, 2024
Webb Simpson voiced criticism toward Dustin Johnson and other athletes participating in the LIV Golf circuit.

PGA Tour board member Webb Simpson has expressed disappointment in Dustin Johnson and other players who opted to join LIV Golf, a competing circuit that emerged in 2022. Johnson, a two-time major winner, left the PGA Tour for LIV and achieved success, winning the LIV individual title in 2022 and a team championship with 4Aces GC. However, Simpson believes that by leaving the PGA, Johnson may miss the chance to be recognized among the top 10 greatest players in golf history.

Simpson acknowledges the allure of LIV, with its lucrative offers and player-friendly schedule, but emphasizes the significance of the PGA’s historical legacy. He expresses concern about the influence of greed in the sport and the shift in priorities among younger players, who may prioritize money over achievements like Hall of Fame induction, PGA Tour wins, and major championships.

Despite reports of Johnson receiving substantial fees to join LIV, Simpson points out that the PGA still holds superiority in terms of history and legacy. Johnson’s move to LIV was surprising, considering his previous commitment to the PGA Tour. Simpson questions the younger generation’s values and their focus on financial gains rather than traditional golf achievements.
