MPs have approved the progression of the Football Governance Bill calling for the Independent Regulator for Football to be granted powers to reintroduce FA Cup replays, amend parachute payment systems and enforce financial settlements between the Premier League and the EFL. The bill focused on improving financial regulation in English football received bipartisan support in the House of Commons.

However, some MPs expressed concerns about the scope of the regulator authority particularly regarding parachute payments and preserving footballing heritage. Additionally, there were discussions about the “backstop” power which currently requires activation by a competition organizer rather than the regulator itself. The bill will now move to the committee stage for further discussion and potential amendments.

MP Tim Farron plans to propose an amendment to reinstate FA Cup replays and ensure all member clubs have a say in tournament organization and rules.
