National Stadium's Pitch Condition Raises Concerns Ahead of Malaysia-Oman World Cup Qualifier

Concerns arise regarding the readiness of the National Stadium at Bukit Jalil for the pre-World Cup football qualifier between Malaysia and Oman on Tuesday, as netizens question the state of the pitch. Photos circulating on social media show the pitch in less than ideal conditions with some fans attributing its deterioration to an Ed Sheeran concert held on February 24.

Despite videos showing signs of grass growth, the pitch is deemed far from perfect. However, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) remains optimistic, standing by their earlier statement expressing satisfaction with the stadium’s condition. National coach Kim Pan Gon voiced disappointment with the pitch’s state on March 8. Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh addressed concerns, stating that the photos circulating online may not accurately represent the current situation. 

Malaysia Stadium Corporation chairman Datuk Hans Isaac expressed eagerness for the upcoming match. Past incidents, such as poor pitch conditions during the Merdeka Tournament and after a Coldplay concert, add to worries. Whether the National Stadium’s pitch will meet Fifa’s standards remains uncertain, as match officials typically inspect venues two days before kick-off, with criteria including visible field lines, appropriate grass length and overall safety.
