Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali faces misconduct charges from the Football Association for allegedly breaching betting rules. The 23 years old, currently serving a 10 months ban by the Italian Football Federation for similar infractions is accused of placing 50 bets on matches between August and October 2023. Despite Newcastle acknowledgment of the charges, Tonali maintains the club’s support as investigations continue.
His ongoing ban, initiated by the FIGC and extended globally by FIFA prohibits him from playing until August and excludes him from Euro 2024 participation. However, Tonali can still train with the team during his suspension. The FA charges add to Tonali challenges which stem from his admitted gambling addiction. He faces penalties for his actions including a therapeutic plan involving public appearances to educate others about the risks of gambling.
The severity of such bans has sparked debate with critics like former player Paul Merson questioning their effectiveness in addressing addiction. Tonali has until April 5 to respond to the FA allegations.
