Nike Faces Backlash Over Skimpy Paris Olympics Uniform for US Track Team

American Olympic track and field athletes are expressing their dissatisfaction with a part of the uniform designed for the Paris Games. The controversial item is a red, white and blue leotard that barely covers the bikini line and was featured on a mannequin without matching shorts. While Nike, the designer claims to have consulted athletes during the design process some athletes including Sha’Carri Richardson and Athing Mu modeled versions with more coverage.

However, a post showcasing the revealing uniform drew criticism on social media. Olympic hurdler Queen Harrison joked about sponsorship from a waxing center while Paralympian long jumper Jaleen Roberts highlighted the lack of coverage during athletic movements. Retired athlete Lauren Fleshman criticized the uniform as emblematic of outdated patriarchal norms.

Olympic gold medalist pole vaulter Katie Moon defended Nike but acknowledged concerns about the uniform’s design. Moon emphasized that athletes should have the choice to wear what makes them comfortable and confident during competition. She also reassured that trying on the attire herself did not raise significant concerns about coverage.
