Nottingham Forest is considering erecting a memorial at the City Ground to honor the 97 Liverpool supporters who tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster. Chairman Tom Cartledge expressed openness to discussing the idea with fans who attended the match and indicated a willingness to involve the club’s fan advisory board in the decision-making process.
While Forest has previously paid tribute to the victims by leaving 97 seats vacant during a match against Liverpool and covering them with a memorial banner, supporters are now calling for a permanent tribute. Martin Peach who witnessed the tragedy as a young Forest fan, emphasizes the importance of having a focal point for remembrance and discussion.
Former Forest defender Brian Laws agrees, stating that the club should have commemorated the event earlier. Liverpool fan Diane Lynn who survived the crush supports the idea of a memorial at Forest’s ground, noting its significance as a place for reflection and support. Chairman Cartledge acknowledges the club’s responsibility to support fans affected by the tragedy and pledges to explore ways to provide assistance and support.
