Napoli and Nigeria’s talisman, Victor Osimhen, has been announced as the 2023 African Footballer of the Year at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards ceremony held in Marrakech.
This marks the first time a Nigerian player has claimed a double at this prestigious award since Arsenal’s Nwankwo Kanu did so in 1999.
The 25-year-old Osimhen triumphed over Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi for the award. The decision was made through a vote by a combination of CAF’s technical committee, media representatives, and the head coaches and captains of African nations.
Nigeria enjoyed a double victory, securing the women’s version of the award as well. Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala claimed the honor for the sixth time.
