In an intense Africa Cup of Nations last-16 clash in San Pedro the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) emerged victorious over Egypt in a thrilling penalty shootout securing an 8-7 win after a 1-1 draw. Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou Gabal missed his penalty hitting the crossbar while his counterpart Lionel Mpasi scored for DR Congo.

Meschack Elia initially gave DR Congo the lead but Mostafa Mohamed equalized for Egypt with a penalty just before halftime. Egypt’s Mohamed Hamdy received a red card in extra time. Despite missing star player Mohamed Salah due to injury Egypt held on defensively leading to the shootout. DR Congo advances to the quarter-finals to face Guinea while Egypt exits the tournament.
