In a forthcoming documentary about Jermain Defoe, Harry Redknapp acknowledges “breaking all the rules” when signing Defoe for Portsmouth in 2008. Defoe recounts receiving a call from Redknapp while still under contract with Tottenham. Redknapp admits that if Defoe was under contract it could lead to an FA inquiry.
Although the FA has no plans to investigate the Premier League might step in with an official complaint. Defoe’s 2008 move is already under scrutiny due to an unlicensed agent but the FA closed the case without action. Defoe suggests Redknapp contacted him again about returning to Tottenham in the documentary.
Redknapp dismisses the controversy stating that speaking to players or agents before official meetings is standard practice in transfers. The FA and Premier League have not commented on the matter.
