The Premier League offered Sheffield United a glimmer of hope for avoiding relegation in a now-deleted social media post. The Blades’ fate was sealed on Saturday after suffering a 5-1 defeat against Newcastle confirming their drop to the Championship. Despite taking an early lead through Anel Ahmedhodzic, Sheffield United hopes dwindled as Alexander Isak equalized for Newcastle. Bruno Guimaraes and Isak further extended Newcastle lead in the second half with Ben Osborn scoring an own goal and Callum Wilson adding a fifth for the hosts.
However, a deleted Premier League post briefly hinted at Sheffield United demotion depending on appeals from Everton and Nottingham Forest regarding points deductions. Forest received a four-point penalty for breaching profitability and sustainability regulations while Everton initially had a 10-point deduction reduced to six but faced further sanctions.
Both clubs have appealed awaiting a decision in the coming weeks. Although Sheffield United situation remains uncertain, their slim chance of survival hinges on Everton and Forest facing additional points deductions. However, given their poor season record with only three wins a prolonged stay in the Premier League appears unlikely. The Blades currently trail Everton by 20 points and Forest by 10 points.
