Emma Raducanu faced a setback in her comeback from injury losing in the first round of the Qatar Open to Anhelina Kalinina. The 2021 US Open champion struggled in the first set making 15 unforced errors. While she improved in the second set, Kalinina eventually secured the win. Raducanu’s aggressive style especially with her forehand showed promise but her inconsistency and high error count proved challenging.
Raducanu’s scheduling choices opting for wildcard entries into big events have raised questions and she will not participate in the WTA 1000 event in Dubai next week. Naomi Osaka on the other hand secured a victory in Doha defeating Caroline Garcia to progress to the second round. Naomi Osaka returning from maternity leave aims to build momentum in her comeback.
