Recalling Premier League's Nail-Biting Three-Way Title Races in History

Only a few instances in Premier League history have seen intense three ways title races with teams separated by just two points towards the end of the season:

• In the 2013-14 season, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea were separated by only two points by early May. City eventually claimed the title after a dramatic finale, marked by Steven Gerrard slip and Crystal Palace comeback.
• Similarly, in 2001-02, Arsenal led Liverpool by a point with Manchester United trailing behind. Arsenal secured the title with a game in hand and a remarkable winning streak capped off by a victory over United.
• In 1995-96, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool were closely matched in points with eight games remaining. United ultimately emerged victorious despite a strong challenge from Newcastle.

Should teams finish level on points, the Premier League title is decided based on goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results and away goals in head-to-head matches. Currently, simulations suggest a 9.4% chance of at least two teams finishing level on points and only a 0.5% chance of all three teams doing so. With the title race heating up, unexpected twists and turns are expected until the final day of the season on 19 May.
