Referee Paul Tierney Excluded from Next Premier League Matches After Liverpool-Forest Controversy
Paul Tierney who made an error in Liverpool’s victory at Nottingham Forest, will not officiate in the next round of Premier League matches but will serve as the video assistant referee (VAR) for Arsenal’s game against Brentford. Tierney’s mistake involved stopping play for a head injury to a Liverpool player leading to a controversial restart that indirectly contributed to Liverpool’s winning goal. Despite criticism and protests from Forest, Tierney’s decision did not violate International Football Association Board rules directly.
In a separate development, referee Sunny Singh Gill is set to make history as the first British South Asian to officiate a Premier League match when he referees Crystal Palace vs. Luton Town. His family has a remarkable legacy in football officiating with his father being the first English Football League referee to wear a turban and his brother being the first Sikh-Punjabi Premier League assistant referee.
