Resilient Ivory Coast Claims Third AFCON Title in Dramatic Comeback Victory

Sebastien Haller secured a heroic victory for Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Nigeria scoring the decisive goal in a second half comeback. William Troost-Ekong had initially put Nigeria ahead but Franck Kessie equalized for Ivory Coast.

The hosts who overcame challenges including a coaching change and early defeats secured their third continental title. The tournament marked by drama and upsets showcased Ivory Coast’s resilience under interim coach Emerse Fae.

Ivory Coast spent over $1 billion on hosting with President Alassane Outtara celebrating the win. Nigeria despite being unbeaten before the final received $4 million in prize money. Fae in just his fourth game as a senior manager guided Ivory Coast to victory in front of their home crowd making them the 12th host nation to win the Nations Cup title.
