Road to Paris: Badminton 172 Quota Places And Olympic Hopefuls

A total of fifteen medals will be awarded in the Paris 2024 badminton competition across five events. China, with a remarkable record of six medals at Tokyo 2020, aims to continue its success, while European countries seek to build on their momentum from previous editions. Badminton, an Olympic sport since Barcelona 1992, has seen China as the most successful nation, followed by Indonesia. The Paris 2024 qualification pathway involves awarding 172 quota places based on ‘Paris Ranking Lists.’

Results from various competitions will be considered, with 83 quota places per gender allocated via direct qualification. The qualification period runs from May 1, 2023, to April 28, 2024. Quota places will be awarded to National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and a maximum of eight athletes per gender from the same NOC can participate. The competition format includes singles and doubles events with group and knockout stages. Notable athletes include Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen and Momota Kento from Japan in men’s singles, and Spain’s Carolina Marin and Japan’s Yamaguchi Akane in women’s singles.

In doubles, Chinese pair CHEN Qingchen and JIA Yifan, and Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wook Yik are among the favorites. In mixed doubles, Chinese pairs dominate, with ZHENG Siwei and HUANG Yaqiong aiming to add an Olympic title to their achievements. The Paris 2024 badminton competition will be held at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena from July 27 to August 5.
